Sumiko Murgai Nanda

She is one of the best known Fashion Photographers of India. She shoots fashion with a highly artistic eye. Working with both colour and black and white, she loves to experiment with extremes of lighting, composition and styling. She has documented the works of many leading designers across borders including Tarun Tahilyani, Rina Dhaka, Rohit Bal, JJ Valaya, Suneet Verma, Manish Arora, Ritu Kumar to name a few..

Besides this she has many commercial ventures to her credit. Recently she had also dabbled with life style and food photography. Has done assignments for premium life style brand-Good Earth.

Sumiko was always interested in the visual medium and used to sketch and paint in her early years, but finally it was photography that she found most interesting.

Her career started by assisting leading Photographer Amit Pasricha for a few months after which she branched off on her own. Post the apprenticeship the learning has really never stopped. No opportunity is missed to attend Photography workshops across the borders or attending talks and seminars relating to the subject. Learning is just an ongoing process and has not stopped at educational institutions.

When she took up photography she never imagined that it would take shape as a full time profession. At that point she was simply following her passion. Sumiko Loves interacting with people and understanding the various layers of their lives and photography was just an extension of that for her. This curiosity also led her to follow many serious and interesting subjects and capture some real and telling moments about these subjects as she captured them through her lens.

She followed the Femina Miss India’s for a couple of years capturing their behind the scenes moments. Currently she is working on a photo essay on Delhi.

Education

Sumiko has studied in various schools across the country since she comes from an army background. The last few years of her schooling were from the Army Public School in New-Delhi. She did her graduation from Lady Shri Ram College in Philosophy Hons. Alongside she did French and then went to France on a scholarship from Alliance Francaise. Got into serious photography after she came back from France.
